42A Human Resources Specialist is often described as the Armyβs HR and personnel administration role.
Soldiers in this MOS support the daily administrative needs of Army units by maintaining personnel records, processing documents, assisting with promotions, supporting leave and assignment actions, and helping Soldiers with HR-related matters.
Because every Army unit needs accurate personnel support, 42A is an important MOS across the Army.
Some of the primary responsibilities of a 42A Human Resources Specialist include:
Maintaining Soldier personnel records
Processing personnel actions and administrative paperwork
Supporting promotions and assignment-related documents
Assisting with leave, pay, and benefits-related paperwork
Managing HR systems and personnel databases
Preparing official Army correspondence
Supporting commanders, staff, and Soldiers
Organizing and maintaining administrative records
Assisting with unit-level HR operations
This MOS requires accuracy, confidentiality, communication skills, and strong attention to detail.
Actual duties and work environments may vary depending on the type of unit, assignment, training level, and deployment status.
Soldiers entering the 42A MOS will first complete approximately 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training (BCT).
After BCT, Soldiers attend approximately 9 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for Human Resources Specialist training.
Training may include:
Army human resources systems
Personnel records management
Administrative procedures
Military correspondence
Personnel actions
HR office operations
Data entry and records management
Training content and length may change depending on Army policy.
42A Human Resources Specialist is generally considered a U.S. citizen required MOS.
Because this position may involve access to personnel records, administrative systems, and sensitive Army information, citizenship requirements may apply.
While Green Card holders may still be eligible to enlist in the U.S. Army, eligibility for the 42A MOS itself may be limited until U.S. citizenship requirements are met.
Actual job availability depends on multiple factors, including:
Citizenship status
Security eligibility
ASVAB line scores
Medical qualifications
Current Army job availability
Applicants should always verify eligibility with an official recruiter.
42A generally requires the following ASVAB line scores:
GT: 100
CL: 90
It is important to understand that Army MOS qualification is not based only on the overall AFQT score.
MOS eligibility may also depend on:
AFQT score
Line scores
Citizenship requirements
Medical qualifications
Security eligibility
Current MOS availability
Applicants interested in 42A should pay close attention to both the GT and CL line scores.
Experience as a 42A Human Resources Specialist may support future civilian career opportunities in human resources, administration, and personnel management.
Potential related career paths may include:
Human Resources Assistant
Administrative Specialist
Office Manager
Personnel Coordinator
HR Support Staff
Government Administration
Records Management Specialist
Recruiting Support
Payroll or Benefits Support
However, completing Army 42A training does not automatically guarantee a civilian HR certification or job placement. Additional education, certification, or employer-specific requirements may apply.
42A Soldiers support Army personnel administration, HR systems, Soldier records, personnel actions, and unit-level administrative operations.
42A is generally considered a U.S. citizen required MOS. Green Card holders may still be eligible to enlist in the Army, but eligibility for 42A may be limited until U.S. citizenship requirements are met.
42A generally requires a GT score of 100 and a CL score of 90.
Training is approximately 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 9 weeks of Advanced Individual Training.
Yes. Experience in personnel records, HR systems, administration, and office operations may help support future civilian opportunities in HR and administrative fields.

Army MOS / Army Benefits / Enlistment Information for Korean Applicants
I currently serve at the Fairfax Recruiting Center in Virginia, where I assist applicants in the Northern Virginia area.
Because many parts of the U.S. Army enlistment process can be coordinated through online consultation, I also assist Korean applicants from other states across the United States, not only those living in Virginia.
Note: Actual MEPS processing and shipping procedures are generally handled based on the applicantβs residential area.
