Hello,
My name is SSG Lee, Ho Yong, and I am a U.S. Army Recruiter currently serving at the Fairfax Recruiting Center in Virginia.
Many applicants know that the U.S. Army offers medical coverage through TRICARE, but dental coverage is often less understood.
Applicants with families often ask:
βDoes dental coverage apply to my spouse and children?β
βHow much does the TRICARE Dental Program cost?β
βIs Active Duty dental coverage different from Reserve dental coverage?β
βIs the service member included, or is it only for family members?β
Dental care in the United States can be expensive, especially for families. Routine exams, fillings, crowns, emergency dental care, and childrenβs dental needs can create real out-of-pocket costs.
This page was created to help applicants understand the TRICARE Dental Program, how monthly premiums differ between Active Duty, Selected Reserve, and IRR, and why dental coverage can be an important part of the overall military benefits package.
The TRICARE Dental Program, also known as TDP, is a dental insurance program available to eligible service members and family members.
Dental coverage is separate from regular TRICARE medical coverage. Monthly premiums depend on the sponsorβs military status and the type of enrollment.
According to TRICARE, monthly premiums depend on whether the sponsor is Active Duty, Selected Reserve, or Individual Ready Reserve, and on the enrollment type: Sponsor Only, Single, Family, or Sponsor and Family.
Active Duty and Reserve members may both have access to dental coverage, but the cost structure is different.
For Active Duty, the service member generally receives dental care through the military dental system. TRICARE Dental Program premiums are mainly used to understand family member coverage.
For Selected Reserve or IRR Mobilization Only, the sponsor may enroll as Sponsor Only, Single, Family, or Sponsor and Family depending on eligibility and enrollment type.
In simple terms:
Active Duty: lower-cost dental premiums for family members
Selected Reserve / IRR Mobilization Only: premiums depend on whether the sponsor, family, or both are enrolled
IRR Non-Mobilization: Sponsor and Family coverage may cost more than the other categories
The amounts below are based on TRICAREβs official monthly premium rates effective March 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027. TRICARE also states that the Dental Program is a βpay aheadβ program, meaning each payment is for the next month of coverage.
TRICARE Dental Program monthly premiums vary by sponsor status, pay grade, family enrollment type, and Reserve or IRR status. This comparison shows 2026β2027 monthly premium examples for Active Duty, Selected Reserve, and IRR categories. Always confirm the latest rates on the official TRICARE website before enrollment.
The biggest difference is whether the sponsor is included and how the family is enrolled.
For Active Duty, family dental coverage is relatively low-cost. For example, Active Duty Family coverage is $22.85 per month for E-4 and below and $30.47 per month for E-5 and above during the 2026β2027 premium period.
For Selected Reserve / IRR Mobilization Only, the monthly cost can be higher depending on whether the sponsor is included. Family coverage is $76.18 per month, while Sponsor and Family coverage is $84.87 for E-4 and below or $87.90 for E-5 and above.
A simple way to understand it:
Active Duty family coverage: generally lower monthly premium
Reserve / IRR coverage: cost depends heavily on whether the sponsor is included
IRR Non-Mobilization Sponsor + Family: highest listed monthly premium at $105.48
Sponsor Only
Dental coverage for the service member only. This may apply to Reserve or IRR categories depending on eligibility.
Single
Dental coverage for one family member. The sponsor is not included.
Family
Dental coverage for more than one family member. The sponsor is not included.
Sponsor and Family
Dental coverage for both the service member and eligible family members. This is mainly relevant for Reserve or IRR categories.
Dental care can become expensive without insurance.
Even basic dental needs such as exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, emergency treatment, or childrenβs dental care can create significant costs for a family.
For applicants with a spouse or children, dental coverage is not just a small extra benefit. It can be part of the real financial value of joining the Army, especially when comparing Active Duty and Reserve options.
Many applicants compare Active Duty and Army Reserve based only on dental insurance costs.
However, it is often more important to evaluate the overall family benefit package rather than focusing on dental coverage alone.
For applicants with a spouse or children, healthcare coverage (TRICARE), dental coverage (TDP), housing allowances (BAH), food allowances (BAS), and stable monthly income should all be considered together.
While the Army Reserve can provide valuable benefits, Active Duty often offers a more comprehensive package of healthcare, dental coverage, and family support benefits.
If reducing long-term family healthcare and living expenses is an important goal, it may be worth comparing Active Duty and Army Reserve side by side rather than looking only at dental insurance premiums.
The goal is not to determine which option is universally better, but to identify which path best fits your family's needs, priorities, and future plans.
Generally, Active Duty service members receive dental care through the military dental system.Β
The TRICARE Dental Program is mainly used to understand dental coverage for eligible family members.

The rates listed on this page are based on TRICAREβs official rates effective March 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027. Applicants should confirm the latest rates through the official TRICARE website before enrolling.Β
TRICARE explains that the Dental Program is a βpay aheadβ program, meaning each payment is for the next month of coverage.Β
If premiums are not paid properly, coverage may be affected, so applicants should review payment requirements directly through TRICARE before enrolling.Β
The TRICARE Dental Program can be an important part of the overall military benefits package, especially for applicants with a spouse or children.
The cost structure can look different depending on whether you are considering Active Duty, Selected Reserve, or IRR, and whether you need coverage for yourself, your family, or both.
If you are comparing Active Duty and Reserve options, I can help you understand the general cost structure and how dental coverage may fit into your overall benefits comparison.

Army MOS / Army Benefits / Enlistment Information for Korean Applicants
I currently serve at the Fairfax Recruiting Center in Virginia, where I assist applicants in the Northern Virginia area.
Because many parts of the U.S. Army enlistment process can be coordinated through online consultation, I also assist Korean applicants from other states across the United States, not only those living in Virginia.
Note: Actual MEPS processing and shipping procedures are generally handled based on the applicantβs residential area.
