Hello,
my name is SSG Ho Yong Lee, a Korean U.S. Army Recruiter currently serving at the Fairfax Recruiting Center in Virginia.
Through real conversations with applicants, one thing I have noticed is that there is a lot of information online about the U.S. Army and military enlistment. However, some of that information is outdated, no longer accurate under current standards, or simply misunderstood.
Because there is so much information available, many people feel confused about what is actually current, accurate, and relevant to their situation.
As an active-duty Soldier and U.S. Army Recruiter who works directly with applicants, I created these pages to provide Korean-speaking individuals and families in the United States with more realistic, practical, and up-to-date information about Army enlistment and benefits.
This guide is based on questions I often receive during real consultations and includes topics such as:
β’ U.S. Army enlistment process
β’ Active Duty vs. Army Reserve
β’ Military pay and BAH
β’ GI Bill and education benefits
β’ TRICARE healthcare and family benefits
β’ MOS / Army jobs and career opportunities
β’ Enlistment information for Green Card holders
β’ Eligibility requirements and preparation steps
β’ Post-service career options and how military experience can be used after service
Although I am currently based in Northern Virginia, I also assist Korean-speaking applicants from many other states, including California, Texas, Georgia, New Jersey, and other areas across the United States through online consultation.
Due to the nature of the U.S. Army enlistment process, the actual MEPS processing and shipping procedures are generally handled based on the applicantβs place of residence, which means applicants living outside Virginia may still be able to receive consultation and support.
Some detailed preparation materials and step-by-step guides are provided separately to applicants who are actively going through the consultation and enlistment process.
I continue to update this guide based on real applicant questions, current standards, and practical information from the enlistment process. My goal is to make this page a helpful and realistic Army Career & Benefits Guide for Korean-speaking individuals and families living in the United States.
U.S. Army enlistment requirements, benefits, pay, BAH, and GI Bill explained.
Eligibility for green card holders, MEPS medical screening, and waiver guidance included.
β οΈ Most pay and benefit examples on this page are based on Active Duty (Full-Time Army) service.
Reserve service is typically part-time, and pay and benefit structures may differ.
Looking for a career in the U.S. Army? Contact SSG Lee Ho Yong, a dedicated recruiter serving the Fairfax, Northern Virginia area, Washington D.D., and Maryland. Learn about benefits, MOS options, and more.
Even if you are considering the Army Reserve, key benefits such as pay, BAH, BAS, TRICARE, and GI Bill may work differently from Active Duty.
If keeping your current job or school schedule is your top priority, the Reserve may be a good fit. However, if stable income, housing support, healthcare coverage, and long-term education benefits are more important, it is important to compare Active Duty as well.

Are you staying within familiar places and familiar people, even while living in the United States?
This country is vast, and the opportunities available to you and your children go far beyond any one place.
But fear of the unknown can quietly keep you in the same spot.
The step you hesitate to take today may be the very thing standing between you and the βreal opportunitiesβ this country has to offer.
Donβt limit your childrenβs world.
When parents see more of the world, their children dream bigger.
Life in the U.S. is more than going back and forth between work and home.
Through the U.S. Army, moving to a new state or overseas isnβt just a relocation β itβs an opportunity to expand your perspective and your future.
When parents stay in the same place, children often grow up thinking thatβs all there is.
But with the Armyβs full relocation support, you can show your children a wider world β new places, new cultures, and new possibilities.
Children who grow up seeing more of the world dream on a different level.
If I had stayed where I was comfortable in California,
I would have never experienced life across Virginia and Korea β or expanded what was possible for my family.
All you need is the courage to take that first step.
From moving costs to relocation support, the rest is taken care of.
For some, this is the beginning of a better future for their children.
For others, itβs a turning point β breaking out of routine and finding a new direction in life.
Step beyond what feels familiar, and discover the real opportunities waiting for you.
π It all starts with one small step β reach out for a consultation.
We tailor the best relocation plan and benefits to your situationΒ
β whether youβre single or supporting a family.
Thinking alone wonβt move you forward. Asking shows you the way.
One of the biggest advantages of life in the U.S. Army is the opportunity to start a new chapter in a new environment.
Many people wonder where they will be stationed β and the entire process is fully supported.
All moving costs related to your duty station are fully covered by the U.S. government.
From Virginia to Texas, Hawaii, Korea, Europe, and beyond β
you and your family can experience life in different parts of the world.
Wherever you go, youβll receive housing support based on the cost of living (BAH) or be provided military housing β
allowing you to settle in without financial burden.
I left California and had the opportunity to live in Korea and Virginia β
experiences that expanded what was possible for my family.
If I had stayed in one place, I would have never experienced these opportunities.
My children have grown up seeing different cultures and perspectives firsthand.
The U.S. Army is not just a career change.
Itβs a system where your relocation and transition are fully supported β
so you can focus on building your future and providing for your family.

U.S. Army compensation is more than just a paycheck.
Itβs a cost-of-livingβadjusted system designed to support your real lifestyle.
A large portion of your income is tax-free β which makes a significant difference.
Your total compensation includes:
β’ π° Base Pay
β’ π BAH (Housing Allowance)
β’ π± BAS (Food Allowance)
β οΈ Most pay and benefit examples on this page are based on Active Duty (Full-Time Army) service.
Reserve service is typically part-time, and pay and benefit structures may differ.
E-4 (Entry-Level) | Washington, DC Area | With Dependents
β’ π° Base Pay: $3,142.20
β’ π± BAS: $476.95 (100% tax-free)
β’ π BAH: $3,096.00 (100% tax-free)
π Total Monthly: ~$6,715.15
π Estimated Annual: ~$80,500
Over $3,500/month (~$43,000/year) is completely tax-free.
In a civilian job, a $80K salary is heavily taxed.
In the Army, a large portion of your income is not.
π Thatβs why the real purchasing power can feel like a $90Kβ$100K+ salary.
Your income doesnβt stay the same β it grows automatically:
β’ π° Annual pay raises (typically 3β5%)
β’ π BAH & BAS increase with cost of living
β’ β± Automatic raises every 2 years (time in service)
π Promotion + time + inflation = steady income growth
Even without major changes, your income increases over time.
Unlike many civilian jobs, your pay is structured to grow consistently.
In high-cost areas, tax-free housing allowance becomes a major financial advantage.
These numbers are just examples.
Your actual pay depends on:
β’ Education (college credits)
β’ Prior experience
β’ Duty station location
π In many cases, total compensation can be significantly higher.
When looking at U.S. Army pay, it is important not to focus only on Basic Pay. Housing support (BAH), food allowance (BAS), healthcare benefits, and whether housing and meals are provided should also be considered.
For Soldiers with dependents, BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) may be provided depending on duty location and dependency status. Since some of these allowances are paid as tax-free benefits, they can make a significant difference in overall take-home value.
For single Soldiers, depending on the situation, housing in the barracks and access to the DFAC (dining facility) may be provided. Because of this, fixed living expenses such as rent and food costs may be lower compared to many young adults starting out in civilian life.
However, actual take-home pay and potential savings can vary depending on rank, years of service, duty location, dependency status, taxes, personal spending habits, vehicle expenses, insurance costs, and other individual factors. For the most accurate estimate, it is best to review each personβs situation individually.

From 88H (Cargo Specialist) to Recruiter β Iβll share the transformation I personally experienced in the U.S. Army.
I began my Army career as an 88H (Cargo Specialist),
leaving behind the life I had built in California and gaining experience across Virginia and Korea.
Through those years of challenge and growth,
the Armyβs structured support system helped transform
my life β and my familyβs future β into something far more stable and secure.
While serving, I earned my Associate Degree (AA)
through Tuition Assistance,
and I am currently pursuing my Bachelorβs Degree (BA).
π The Army didnβt just give me a job β
it gave me a path to keep growing.
I transferred my Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits
to my four children.
π Knowing their college tuition and living expenses
are already taken care of
gives me peace of mind as a father.
π Itβs one of the most powerful financial decisions Iβve made.
As a father of four, this is one of the most important benefits.
Through TRICARE, my entire family receives
high-quality healthcare without financial stress.
π No worrying about medical bills β
just focusing on our familyβs well-being.
Serving in the U.S. Army is more than job security.
π Itβs a system that helps you build skills, education, and stability
π A pathway to grow into a professional in American society
π A true launchpad for your future
I didnβt just serve β
π I built a life.
And as a father of four,
I chose this path to create a long-term safety net for my family.
Among 150+ career fields β including IT, medical, administration, and logistics β
π Iβll help you find the path that fits your goals.
I understand the hesitation that comes with starting something new.
Iβm not just a recruiter on paper β
Iβm someone who has personally walked this path.
From California to Virginia,
raising four children while building my career in the Army,
Iβve experienced the challenges and growth firsthand.
π As someone who started as an 88H (Cargo Specialist)
and became a Recruiter,
Iβll give you honest, real-world guidance β no filters.
π Iβll share the exact strategies I used
to go from where I started
to where I am today.
π And Iβll help you build a path that works for you.
Iβll help you climb the βladder called the Armyβ with a realistic and honest roadmap.

The Army Reserve can be a great option for those who want to continue working or attending school while serving part-time.
However, if any of the following priorities apply to you, it may be worth comparing Active Duty as well.
β
You need a stable full-time paycheck
β
Housing and food allowances (BAH/BAS) are important to you
β
You need healthcare coverage for yourself or your family
β
Housing or living expenses are a significant concern
β
Having access to a wider range of MOS options is important
β
You need help with both tuition and living expenses
β
You are looking for long-term career growth or a pathway to U.S. citizenship
Many applicants initially consider the Army Reserve, but after reviewing their personal goals and situation, some determine that Active Duty is actually the more practical option.
The best choice depends on your individual circumstances, priorities, and long-term plans. Comparing both options can help you make a more informed decision.
SSG Ho Yong Lee will guide you from start to finish with honesty and clarity.

Enlisting in the U.S. Army is not just a process β
π itβs a strategy.
The most important factors are:
π Accurate documentation
π Strategic job (MOS) selection
Based on your test scores, youβll be presented with multiple options.
π You make the final decision β
but Iβll help you evaluate each option carefully:
β’ Your strengths and interests
β’ Available bonuses

π My goal is simple:
to make sure you donβt miss opportunities

The Army is open to individuals with the motivation and commitment to serve.
π If youβre ready to take the first step, thereβs a path forward for you.
π Basic Eligibility Requirements
β’ π Age: 17β42 years old
(Must ship to Basic Training before turning 43)
β’ πΊπΈ Status: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
(Currently, MAVNI and DACA are not eligible)
β’ π Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) or GED
π High school or college graduates from Overseas are eligible to apply
π Your transcripts can be officially evaluated (credential evaluation)
to meet U.S. requirements
π I will personally guide you through the entire process
π Start at a higher rank based on your college credits:
β’ 24+ credits β E-2
β’ 48+ credits β E-3
β’ Bachelorβs degree β E-4
π Higher rank = higher pay from day one
You may qualify more than you think.
Donβt give up just because you think you might not qualify.
π My role as a recruiter is not to find reasons you canβt β
itβs to find ways to help you become eligible.
π The first step is simply checking whatβs possible for you.
The U.S. Army is currently open up to age 42.
π Many people in their late 30s successfully enlist
and start a strong second chapter in life.
While major medical conditions may be disqualifying,
π many minor issues can be approved through waivers.
π The key is knowing how to approach the process.
π From passing the entrance test
π to programs that allow you to learn while getting paid
Iβll guide you through every step.
π The most important qualification
is your willingness to start.
Eligibility is not something that stops you β
π itβs simply a checklist to get you started.
π Get a 1-on-1 assessment based on your situation
and find out if you can move forward right now.
π Your status, education, and medical history
all play a role β and Iβll help you understand exactly where you stand.
Graduated from a university in Korea?
Concerned about past surgeries?
π Instead of focusing on why it might not work,
focus on how to make it work β
with the right strategy and guidance.
π Iβll show you how your background can translate into
higher rank, better pay, and stronger opportunities from day one.
β οΈ These are general guidelines β your actual eligibility may vary.
π Age, education, English level, and medical history all matter
π Waiver cases are often misunderstood when evaluated alone
Even with similar conditions:
π Some enlist immediately
π Others face delays or disqualification
π The difference is how itβs handled
π Find out exactly what you qualify for
π Get a free 1-on-1 consultation tailored to your situation.
β οΈ Without proper guidance, many applicants end up with less favorable contracts.
Weβve compiled honest and accurate answers based on the most common questions from applicants.
Q. Can I apply if my English is not strong?
A. Yes. Basic communication is required, but you donβt need to be fluent.
The Army provides ESL programs, and your English will be evaluated through the ASVAB and training process.
π Iβll personally guide you on how to prepare.
Q. How difficult is the ASVAB (enlistment test)?
A. The ASVAB measures high schoolβlevel English and math skills.
Math is generally manageable, but English terminology may require preparation.
π Iβll guide you through the test and help you prepare effectively.
Q. What are the age and eligibility requirements?
A. You can apply between the ages of 17 and 42.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder).
Q. What if my Green Card is close to expiring?
A: Depending on the situation, it may still be possible. However, by the time of shipping (Ship Date), applicants may need a valid Green Card or renewal-related documents such as an I-797 Receipt Notice.
If your Green Card is close to expiration, it is important to review your renewal status in advance.
Since every situation is different, it is recommended to first review your current status through consultation.
Q. Can I still join if I dropped out of college?
A: In many cases, yes. The U.S. Army generally considers multiple factors beyond academic background alone, including ASVAB scores, physical qualifications, and immigration status.
However, final education level and completed college credits may affect eligibility or possible starting rank (such as E-2, E-3, or E-4).
Q. Where is MEPS conducted?
A: In most cases, MEPS processing is conducted at the location closest to the applicantβs residence.
Although I am currently stationed in Virginia, applicants from other states can still complete the process through online consultation, while testing and medical processing are generally completed through their local MEPS.
Q. Can applicants from other states apply?
A: Although I am currently stationed in Fairfax, Virginia, I also assist Korean applicants living in states such as California, Texas, Georgia, and New Jersey through online consultation.
In most cases, MEPS processing and enlistment procedures are completed based on the applicantβs local area.
Q. Is military service dangerous?
A. It depends on your role. The U.S. Army offers over 150 career fields (MOS).
Many positions are non-combat roles in IT, medical, administration, logistics, and technical fields.
By choosing the right job, many Soldiers work in structured and professional environments.
π Your experience depends on the role you choose.
Q. Do all Soldiers have to deploy to combat zones?
A. No. Not all Soldiers serve in combat or deploy to war zones.
Assignments vary based on your MOS, unit, and global conditions.
Many serve in stable environments within the U.S. or overseas locations like Korea and Europe.
π Your specific assignment depends on your situation.
Q. Can I obtain U.S. citizenship through military service?
A. Yes. Serving in the U.S. Army can be one of the fastest paths to U.S. citizenship.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you may apply during your service with expedited processing, and fees may be waived.
Q. How long is Basic Training?
A. Basic Combat Training (BCT) lasts about 10 weeks.
After that, you will attend Advanced Individual Training (AIT) based on your MOS.
You will continue to receive full pay and allowances throughout your training.
Q. Can I live with my family?
Yes. In most cases, you can live with your family.
Youβll receive housing support (BAH) or military housing depending on your location.
The Army is designed to support not just the Soldier, but the entire family β including healthcare, relocation support, and access to on-base resources.
Q. Can married applicants join?
Yes. There are applicants who enlist while married and/or with children.
Military service may include benefits related to family support, such as housing allowance (BAH), healthcare coverage (TRICARE), and paid leave.
However, the actual support structure may vary depending on factors such as rank, location, and dependent status.
Your benefits depend on your situation β not just general information.
